What is Functional Therapy?

func·tion·al: of or having a special activity, purpose, or task; relating to the way in which someone works or operates.

ther·a·py: is the treatment intended to relieve or heal a disorder.

Functional Therapy

Functional Therapy is the practice of identifying restrictions in the connective tissues "negative tension" throughout the body. Restructuring of connective tissues through manual therapies and active moments. Education of body mechanics, and reestablishing the mind-muscle connection "positive tension" to bring the body back to a balanced state.

JON HARVEY

My name is Jon Harvey, and I have been practicing as a professional massage therapist for sixteen years. Through the years, I have sharpened my focus and skills with over fifteen thousand hours of practice and 1500 hours of continuing education. This has qualified me to work at the Olympic Training Center on several occasions. This has been the fulfillment of a dream to work with Olympic athletes and other sports professionals to help them achieve an optimal state of performance. It was during my first experience at the OTC in 2013 that I was inspired to understand the human body in a deeper way.

I graduated from the University of Memphis with a B.S. in Exercise and Sport Science and most recently completed a 200-hour certification in Synergetic Myofascial Therapy. Due to my extensive knowledge and years of experience, my clients see me as a "Functional Therapist,” in place of massage therapist, as it illustrates the blending of knowledge from different fields of practice to help people function better in life. I have crafted a method of addressing the client's immediate needs while also investigating the underlying issues.

The release of negative tension and pain structurally balances a person's mind, body, and soul. It revitalizes precious resources for physical, mental, and emotional health. I provide my clients with a safe, calming, and professional environment to relieve pain, recover, and continue to thrive! .

Life moves at a fast pace and your body shouldn’t slow you down. We focus on your body’s mobility and free it of its limitations, so that you can live a healthier and unrestricted life.

MISSION

At Back In Motion Functional Therapy, the emphasis is on putting the patient first and taking extra time to make sure every need is acknowledged. Since my clients strive for a healthy and active lifestyle, my mission is to help them achieve and sustain that so they can continue doing the things they love. I want my client's bodies to function at their highest level possible. I also want to help alleviate any symptoms and underlying problems that may be preventing them from participating in an active lifestyle.

WHAT TO EXPECT

ASSESSMENT - TREATMENT - KNOWLEDGE - PREVENTATIVE EXERCISES

You can expect to begin with a detailed history of your symptoms at your first appointment. This information will help paint a more in-depth picture of your physical activities. I want you to have enough time during an appointment to discuss any concerns you may have and to identify your goals. Click here for recommended attire.

The Back In Motion Difference

BACK IN MOTION STANDARDS OF PRACTICE

BIMFT prides itself on being different than typical manual therapy practitioners. It is my mission to help you heal as quickly as you can through the use of many different types of manual therapies.

APPOINTMENT LENGTH

All appointments are one-on-one. Appointments are in 30-minute and 60-minute sessions depending on your case. In general, the more time we spend, the more issues can be addressed.

COMPREHENSIVE SESSIONS

I understand the limitations of each modality and know each client is different. Blending the use of the most recent research and multiple modalities during a session helps ensures a positive outcome. Sessions can consist of a combination of soft tissue joint manipulation, movement-based fascial release, vibrational technology, and rehabilitation/corrective exercise that complement each session to ensure the best result.

HSA & FLEX SPENDING ACCOUNTS

A detailed statement of each session are provided upon request. Reimbursement policies vary from insurance company to insurance company.

Services Provided

MAT®

MAT was founded on the principle that human movement and exercise are fundamental to human health and that a muscle’s ability to contract efficiently is important for normal movement. Any loss of muscle contraction efficiency may be demonstrated as a loss of motion and decreased physical performance, which may lead to pain and/or the loss of physical capabilities.

MAT® is a specific and unique process for evaluating an individual’s ability to develop efficient muscle contraction(s) by first comparing left and right side range of motion, as the human body is designed to be symmetrical.

SYNERGETIC® STRUCTURAL INTEGRATION ™

SSI is a combination of myofascial techniques and movement education that affects posture and function of the body to restore it to its natural state of alignment and balance. This is accomplished by lengthening, restoring, and reorganizing the fascia, which is the connective tissue matrix of the human body that surrounds muscle, bones, and internal organs, giving them strength and shape. The goal is to combine soft tissue manipulation and client movements to restore the body to its natural state of alignment and balance. SSI has proven to be effective for many with chronic muscular pain, chronic muscle injuries, limited flexibility and range of motion and fibromyalgia.

POSTURAL ASSEMENTS

A client’s posture provides a great deal of information regarding the natural state of their connective tissues. Through postural assessment, it is possible to determine which areas of the body are under more strain than others, and which muscle groups are causing this strain. Performing a postural assessment during each session is crucial due to changes in body mechanics and posture from session to session.

VIBRATIONAL TECHNOLOGY

Percussion therapy from the Hypervolt tool stimulates the receptors in the soft tissue through constant micro contractions of the muscles, thus relieving tension in the musculoskeletal system. Benefits include: reduced muscle stiffness and soreness and improved circulation in the soft tissue structures.

SOFT TISSUE JOINT MOBILIZATION

Mobilization is a hands-on manual therapy designed to restore joint movement, power, and range of motion. The therapist gently coaxes joint motion by passive movement within or to the limit of a joint's normal range of motion. The therapist's movement of the joint is very precise and is limited by the amount of joint play, which may be less than 1/8th of an inch.

TRIGGER POINT THERAPY

Trigger Point Therapy is a bodywork technique that involves the application of pressure to tender muscle tissue in order to relieve pain and dysfunction in other parts of the body. It may also be called myofascial (myo meaning muscle, fascial meaning connective tissue) trigger point therapy. Trigger point therapy is sometimes regarded as one of a group of treatment aproaches called neuromuscular therapy or NMT.
